"I'm singing in the rain, ..." Until recent years people loved to feel the cool and clean rains in summer. What could be more refreshing than this? The mystique of gentle mist and rain has been celebrated in Chinese poetry and landscape painting throughout history. However, the image of clean and refreshing rain in the past becomes a confusing memory today. We now always flee and take shelter from tainted rains that could hurt our eyes, irritate our skin and damage our hair. How has the rain lost its pristine charm? Acid rain not only irritates human beings, but brings immense effects upon the environment. The more that scientists investigate acid rain, the more damaging they found it to be to our precious lakes, streams, forests, and wildlife, even to the architectural wonders of antiquity. Scientists found that acid rain rapidly acidifies our lakes and streams, via greatly reduced populations of fish and water plant and some wiped out species. They now have proven that acid rain also renders our vital farm topsoil infertile. Acidification of the soil reduces the number and activity of the soil microbes which break down organic residue to cycle plant nutrients necessary for new plant life. Acidic soil also deprives tree roots of calcium, a vital growth nutrient, and thus stunts and eventually kills unprotected trees. As good citizens, we should urge government to expand modern public transport while mandating and enforcing strict emission controls on coal-burning electric plants and steel factories, and on all air, sea, and land motor vehicles. In the meantime, we should also urge government, academia, and industry to sponsor and undertake the research and development of clean alternative energy sources, especially those of tidal, solar, and wind which Taiwan possesses in abundance. |
